being a bit more positivePosted: July 1, 2014
My friend Laurie, with whom I graduated from Pitzer College in 1975, wrote the following on Facebook:
I am wondering how we can be a bit more positive, more polite and mannerly and inspiring without having our heads in the sand, and without being inactive, naive and uninformed….
Good question. I responded that we can. Laurie added the comment:
Let us all take pledges to discuss and even debate issues and not buy into personal attacks or character assassinations!
This made me think that as ugly as things might seem in the world, we ought to continue to seek a fairer and more just society.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices.
Come, my friends,
‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
— Tennyson, “Ulysses”
We can always continue to strive to build a better world.
