Dodgers or Giants?Posted: April 9, 2015
Here’s a dilemma as we move south. Do I support the Dodgers or the Giants?
After moving to the Bay Area from Oklahoma in 1985 I didn’t follow baseball that closely, though I was nominally a Dodger fan. I started listening to Giants games in 1993 when we rented our house in Mountain View. It made doing yard work much more tolerable and I loved Hank Greenwald’s play-by-play. I was a fan of Jon Miller from his work on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball so I was delighted when he became the Giants’ lead radio broadcaster in 1997.
So now what do I do? The Dodgers haven’t exactly been kind to their fans with their new television arrangement. The new channel is so expensive the major cable and satellite providers haven’t picked it up. Unless you have Time-Warner, who owns the distribution rights, you are out of luck.
The Giants’ broadcasters are great. In addition to Miller, there’s Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow on TV. Dave Flemming has long since come into his own as Jon’s partner on the radio. Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday for the Dodgers are good, but not great. (Although I have seen comments from Dodger fans this week who even question the “good” part.) But then there is Vin Scully.
I can listen to either team’s radio broadcasts on my SiriusXM Internet service. Which team to support is not a question I will be able to answer quickly.
